“Featuring a book on your bookshelf is akin to displaying a trophy. You’ve accomplished something in reading a book; it feels like a victory. The opportunity to display your literary conquests in unique or unexpected ways is something I will greatly miss with e-readers.”

Summer is fast approaching and with it comes the glory of sitting in the hot, eating a frozen treat with speed and fury, attempting to get it finished before it drips down your arm.
I come from a family of frozen treat aficionados… at any given time there was at least a half dozen flavors of Blue Bell, push-ups, Popsicles, ice cream bars and ice cream sandwiches in the deep freeze. And if that wasn’t enough, the ice cream freezer spent much of it’s time in the kitchen sink… whirring and churning homemade ice cream. My grandparents were often forced to lock the deep freeze. Not to keep us from gorging ourselves (that was almost welcomed), but because we would so often open the door threatening all of that precious ice cream with melting.
Scientist and educator Leon Kass has written that the eating of an ice cream cone is uncivilized and undermines human dignity. In spite of Mr. Kass’ feelings, I will spend this summer eating many an ice cream either while mustering as much dignity as I can or completely tossing it to wind… and I might even be convinced to share my ice cream with a dog (even though I don’t have one).
